Suleyman Karaman (born 1956 in Refahiye, Erzincan) is a Turkish politician, who was a former General Manager and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Turkish State Railways (TCDD) and Deputy General Manager of Istanbul transportation authority (IETT). ==Biography== Suleyman Karaman was born in Alacayir village in Refahiye district of Erzincan province in 1956. He attended primary school in Erzincan. Later, he attended Pertevniyal High School in Istanbul. He earned his BS and MS degrees with high honors in mechanical engineering from Istanbul Technical University (ITU) in 1978 and 1981, respectively. He took part in prototyping and upgrading of engines, tractors and agricultural machinery and their compliance tests during his MS studies. He served Turkish armed forces in 1983. Karaman attended doctoral program in ITU until 1984. During doctoral studies he worked as a research assistant and taught technical drawing and machinery lessons. He worked as business manager, deputy general manager and board member in automotive industry between 1984 and 1994. He participated in concept vehicle development as well as localization of imported automotive spare parts such as brakes, compressors, governors. These parts were exhibited in the automotive industry fairs in Europe. Karaman was appointed as Deputy General Manager of Istanbul transportation authority (IETT) by Recep Tayyip Erdogan in 1994 while he was the Mayor of Metropolitan Istanbul. Karaman was in charge of many projects aiming to build a modern public transportation system in Istanbul. Launch of the first electronic ticketing system in Turkey known as AKBIL, replacing aged public buses with modern buses, CNG (compressed natural gas) conversion of existing buses, adding EURO2 buses to public transportation fleet, redesigning bus stops, increasing revenues of IETT through accepting advertisement on buses and bus stops, social responsibility projects such as adding buses designed for disabled citizens to the public transportation fleet and publishing adds for lost people in buses are some of the projects led by Karaman. Karaman served as a board member in municipality companies such as ISFALT, ISBAK, ISTON, ISMER and BELTUR in parallel with IETT. He was actively involved with reforestation and traffic signaling activities in Istanbul. Karaman was appointed as General Manager and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Turkish State Railways (TCDD) in December 31, 2002. Suleyman Karaman was given the duty of building a modern railroad infrastructure which was one of the priorities of the new government. Karaman led more than 100 projects including highspeed rail project.
